Panther Tryouts for 2012/13 will be posted in July!!
In the mean time learn more about out unique development program so you can see how we benefit our players.

Panther Mission Statement:  The Burlington Basketball Panther Program is a Player/Coach development program that follows the Canada Basketball LTAD model, teaches sound basketball fundamentals and participates in (regional/provincial/national/international) competitive play, focused on the goal of creating the province’s premiere skilled competitive basketball Players/Coaches (by the High School Senior Age Groups), in a structure that respects and supports the development of all the participants of Burlington Basketball and the greater Burlington Sports Community.

PANTHERS more than simply REP

By bringing our REP teams under the same CLUB format used by the world's most successful basketball nations, Burlington Basketball PANTHERS offers it's players the challenges of REP basketball but with an individual skills development model, the envy of every other Basketball Program in Ontario. Using the combined 1000 plus years experience of our coaches, our program design is the culmination of watching over 7000 unique players develop under our watch.

Panther Teams are different as they must follow a strict practice to game ratio (approved by the club) from October to March focused on personal skills development. Then the teams are free to focus on team concepts from March on, in preparation for the Ontario Championships.  This not only saves parents family time and money but it allows for each and every player on a Panthers team to become the best they can be, while ensuring school always comes first.

Our Team schedules are structured to work with school teams, holidays and school exam dates.  Panthers is the only REP Basketball Program in Ontario to follow the recommendations of the LTAD, FIBA and Canada Basketball combined, in the selection of it's coaches, players and team schedules.

What does this all mean to our Players?  It means that you aren't playing REP simply so you can say, "I play REP." It means that you have committed to become the best basketball player possible.  Just like former Panthers playing in Universities across North America, it means both in your attitude and actions, everyone knows the type of player you are.  High School Coaches, Provincial Coaches and University Coaches all will know you have developed in a system that ensures you are the type of player they want. It means your development is not negatively impacted by the traditional compromises seen in REP sports.
Panthers is looking first and foremost for players who love the game and want to play it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, rain snow or shine. We do the rest.

Athlete Development Principles of Panthers (Note: Elite teams have specific rules):
-Man to Man Defense mandatory= NO ZONE defense allowed, Panther Players are forced to develop foot speed
-Every Player Plays= NO wasted season on the end of the bench
-NO Positional Play= Taller players learn guard skills and Shorter learn post play
-NO Set Offense= Players learn to play the game instead of simply running to spots on the floor
-Speed Wins= 99.9% of Burlington Players are only Guard height (sub 6'4" boys and 6'1" girls) at maturity
-Quickness= in order to compete at the guard position you must possess explosive first step quickness
-Shooting Form First= World Class shooters cannot succeed without proper shooting form
-Practice Makes Perfect= Learning success only comes through hard work and making mistakes
-Think at All Times= Combined with all the above a 19 year old Panther reaches their potential

The Panther Program 2011/12: (changes for 2012/13 will be posted in July)

Tryouts:  POSTED THE 3RD WEEK OF AUGUST BUT PRE-REGISTER BELOW!

Open, fair and unbiased tryouts are held for each team formed under the Panther Banner with Burlington Basketball, not the coach, having the final say on what players are chosen for the team, eliminating the issue of friends or relationships clouding the process.

A team of coaches oversees the tryout process ensuring all players get a good look and providing several different sets of eyes in narrowing the field of players.  Tryouts will be held on multiple days over a 3 to 4 week period in September. New, returning and former players all have an equal opportunity in making these teams.  Depending on the proposed make up of a given team, the demands on a player during the selection process will vary. Although tryouts are open to everyone, players in all the programs offered by Burlington Basketball will actively be recruited to attend these open tryouts.

For the conditioning and skill development alone, these tryouts are a great opportunity for every player, whether they make the team or not. Over 24 players in each age group could be selected for Panther Teams.

Number of Teams:  Any calendar year Burlington Basketball judges the feasibility of teams by reviewing potential coaching candidates and players attending tryouts and players in all our Programs.  At tryouts the feasibility of teams is determined .  Multiple teams are selected from these tryouts (if applicable) and again other teams often will be formed later in the season from AllStar and MBAB.

Panthers  - Practice a minimum of 2 times a week and if participating in a house league from 3/4 times a week. Tournaments on select weekends, single exhibition games and Provincial Championships complete the season. Team Goals and function is announced before payment is made.  The Club dictates how these teams are run, with advance agreement with the selected coaching team. These teams Compete at Divisions AA, A or -A levels.

Panthers Elite - These Teams are our winning focused teams. Positional play allowed. Practice and games at the coach's sole discretion. Offense at Coach's sole discretion. Team is planned to play both AAU and OBA.  Expected Division 1 competition.

Cost and Commitment:  at the time of the 3rd. Tryout (first tryout is used as an assessment) full details on cost and commitments are supplied to the parents.  Parents are encouraged to review and discuss both cost and commitment with the entire family prior to the commencement of the 4th tryout.

Last season Panthers was the most affordable rep program in Ontario.  For 2011/12 Panthers has decided to keep Panthers as affordable as possible by cutting costs on non-development specific items.  We are focused on how we play not how we look.

Historically the COST of Rep is a barrier to participation across Ontario, that often keeps the best players off the team.  That does not happen with Panthers. Our low fees and Open Tryout Process ensures your child gets a fair and ethical opportunity to make any Panthers Team.

Join the 2011/12 Panther Coaching Team:

Like any community sports organization, coaching is the most important role any volunteer can assume with our club.  Panther coaches are supported by Burlington Basketball in a manner that allows a coach to coach
.  Politics and administration is all handled by the rules and procedures established by the club.
Panther coaches stress fundamentals over all else
because they understand that a young athlete can only excel later in life if the foundation is built and reinforced as they move through our programs.

"A Panthers Coach will lose a game if it means his or her players development could be compromised."

Applications are still being considered for our coaching assignments for the 2012/13 season. We have increased interest and require coaches to support our growth. Whether a parent or basketball enthusiast we encourage everyone to consider letting us help them get coaching!    To apply click here.

A Panther coach must comply with existing Basketball Ontario Coaching guidelines.  Burlington Basketball fully supports it’s coaches by assisting with the cost of certification and holding in house certification classes where applicable.
